Or does it make us want to be thin?
Is Vanity a good thing, ever?
We want to love ourselves, but can loving too much become an unhealthy obsession?
As a Brit, I still value humility, remembering how the phrase “self praise is no praise” got hurled at you if you commented on your own traits.
But now I question that. Shouldn’t we praise ourselves, be our best advocate and supporter? How can we go out in the world with confidence and enthusiasm if we haven’t acknowledged our own talents and gifts?
The world is full of people selling us stuff, through highlighting our inadequacies. The diet culture thrives on the fear we have about our weight. This fear is reiterated with the ‘beauty’ industry which tells us we could be better. It seems we are never there, and don’t get me started on the products to stop the aging process!
What if we walked around believing we were perfect and didn’t need fixing or tweaking? Would we be a vain society or a kinder and gentler one?
Self criticism wounded me. Would self loving heal me?
From my own journey I know this is the only path to take. If you want to have a peaceful relationship with your body and food you’ve got to love yourself. Praising myself for staying on this path became an essential routine. Acknowledging my strengths, gives me a better and clearer perspective on my challenges.
Is vanity about the public declaration?
What if we praise ourselves privately?
If praise comes with gratitude does this keep vanity from turning in a bragging session?
For me praise and gratitude keeps me humble.
