These are the guidelines used in our writing workshops. It is a free style form; it only works if you ignore other writing practices which emphasize structure and editing. This is about writing practice, a prelude and an aid to writing the future edited pieces.
Writing Guidelines
Keep your pen moving
Don’t pause to re-read the line
Don’t think, don’t get logical
It is a brain dump!
You are writing, not editing. Don’t cross out, fix or erase
Prompts take you to the unknown, travel there. It is an amazing adventure
Don’t worry about punctuation, spelling, grammar or content (isn’t this wonderful?)
Brain freeze happens. When it does, just write whatever comes to mind (I can’t think of a thing to say, what’s the matter..ah.etc) yes, write it down
“Don’t think, just write” Ray Bradbury
“Be curious, not judgmental” Ted Lasso
Go for the jugular… write it all down
Dr. Peter Elbow, the pioneer of the freewriting style called it “babbling or jabbering exercises”
Let’s babble and jabber together!
